I’m searching the web to find graphic design studios in Berlin. I stumbled upon the Edenspiekermann Manifesto, which I find simple and true. I could use something like that as well. This is what it says:

We work for your customers. We may have to take their side at times.
Challenge us. Complacency is the ennemy of great work.

Escape good design

J’étais sur le site de Spin, un petit studio de design de Londres que j’adore. J’ai cliqué sur un lien et pouf ! À mon grand étonnement, le résultat ne s’accordait pas du tout avec la maquette publiée sur leur site portfolio.

Je ne crois pas que c’est parce que le « nouveau » design n’a pas été implémenté. J’ai plutôt l’impression qu’on a retouché le superbe design pour en faire quelque chose de très ordinaire, voir médiocre.

Quelle tristesse ! Un gros chou pour Escape Studios.

C’est hier qu’on a officialisé l’exposition « Yellow Pages ». Elle se tiendra à Station C jusqu’au 22 décembre prochain. J’espère que tous ceux qui n’ont pu assister au vernissage viendront faire un tour !

Gyz La Rivière présente, par cette série de 28 sérigraphies en jaune et noir, ses réflexions sur ce qu’il décrit comme le «parochialisme», soit la tendance à classifier immédiatement toute nouvelle chose en lui accolant une étiquette.

L’hiver passé j’ai travaillé en tant qu’infographiste sur ce projet en collaboration avec Gyz. Et lors de ma visite à Rotterdam en avril dernier, j’ai eu la chance de voir l’exposition à la défunte boutique Moose. C’est à mon tour maintenant de la présenter, à Montréal, en première nord-américaine (elle sera également présentée à Chicago éventuellement).

Il y aura un petit vernissage le 28 octobre à 17 h, à Station C.

The Greatest of the Biggest

Back in 2006, after coming back from the Netherlands, I registered to an intensive summer course at UQAM called “International Design with Karel Martens”. Mr. Martens is considered one of the greatest designers of the Netherlands and thought (and still does I think) at Werkplaats Typografie.

We worked on a book on the theme of “link” and I used an absurd poem of my friend and former housemate from Rotterdam, Rogier Stomp aka kO nOrderisk, to represent the subject.

kO’s poetry is a mixture of absurd humor and society critic. There is a genuine influence of Russian Absurdism in his work. His poem “The Greatest of the Biggest Song” which I used in Mr. Marten’s class has now turned into a real book published by Uitgeverij Nadorst which I had the honor to design. The book is called “The Greatest of the Biggest” and is, in itself, a critic on the trend of always wanting bigger, better, more… instead of savouring what is.

I’m waiting to receive my copy in the mail but, in the meantime, here’s the cover page I designed for kO’s first poetry book.

IE6 No More

“Enough is enough. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 was released in late 2001. For its time, it was a decent browser, but in 2009, it is still in use by a significant portion of the web population, and its time is now up.”

Like many of my friends, I decided to STOP to support IE6. I no longer offer it in my offers of service and if my clients want me to support it, they will have to pay extra, that’s it.

Please help us, web designers, programmers and developers, to eradicate this abomination which is called Internet Explorer 6. Visit IE6 No More.

The Vendor Client Relationship

Ça fait déjà plusieurs mois que je me questionne sur ma relation avec le monde du design et ce qu’elle implique comme types de projets (certains qui vont à l’encontre de mes valeurs), compromis, stress, etc. Cette bonne blague, presque réaliste, s’applique à l’argent, oui, mais aussi aux propositions présentées à certains clients. Voilà pourquoi je commence à m’essouffler.

Web fonts, Web retards

We are so late when it comes to fonts & the Web. Why is it taking so much time to get to a solution? Now, I can’t imagine designing a website with a font other than Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Lucida, Times New Roman or Georgia. I want to be liberated and I hope it will come soon.

At least we can learn a little about what’s going on on i love typography.
